Carpet Basics

New to Carpet Buying? Here's What Actually Matters

Carpet shopping throws a lot of unfamiliar words at people who just want a nice floor. Here's the short version of what each one actually means.

Pile Type

This just means how the fibres are woven.

Loop Pile

Tightly looped fibre, hard-wearing and good for busy areas.

Twist Pile

Fibres twisted together, which hides footprints and vacuum marks well, a popular choice for bedrooms and living rooms.

Saxony

The classic soft, deep-pile look. Comfortable underfoot, but shows footmarks more, suits lower-traffic rooms like bedrooms better than a busy hallway.

Wool vs Polypropylene

Wool

A natural fibre. Looks and feels premium, and it's naturally quite resilient.

Polypropylene

A synthetic fibre. Generally more affordable and more stain-resistant, a common choice for families and rentals.

VS

Neither is objectively "better", it depends on your budget and how the room gets used.

Underlay

Easy to overlook, but it affects how the carpet feels underfoot, how long it lasts, and how well it insulates the room. We'll cover this properly when we measure your room.

Still sounds like a lot? That's exactly what the free home visit is for. Bring your questions, we'd rather explain it in your living room than have you guess from a website.

Colours & Finishes

Grey and beige remain the two most requested colours we fit, both work with almost any furniture and don’t date quickly. Cream adds warmth to a room with a lot of hard surfaces. If you want more character, patterned carpets or a striped stair runner give a room a bit more personality without redoing the whole colour scheme.

Underlay & Accessories

New carpet generally performs and lasts better on fresh underlay rather than whatever’s already down, old underlay is often compressed and won’t give your new carpet the support it needs. When we measure your room, we’ll go through underlay options with you and make sure it’s clearly included in your quote, nothing added as a surprise later.

You may also need carpet grippers (the strips that hold the carpet edge in place) and door bars (the trims where carpet meets another floor type). Both are things we can supply and fit as part of the job, not an extra you need to source yourself.

Every Budget, Every Style

We keep a genuine spread of options, from simple, affordable carpets through to more premium wool ranges, so the right answer depends on your room and budget rather than us pushing you toward one end of the shelf. If you’re after a remnant or roll end for a small space like a landing or box room, ask us, we may have offcuts available depending on current stock.

Want the carpet without the fitting, or already have a fitter of your own? We can also do supply-only orders, just let us know what you need when you enquire.

Built to Last

Carpet That Fits Real Life

Some carpet questions come up more than most. Here's straight advice for the situations we hear about most often.

Got Pets?

Look for a tightly woven, stain-resistant carpet, generally polypropylene or a treated wool blend. It won't stop every accident, but it makes cleanup genuinely easier and holds up better against claws.

Worried About Allergies?

Carpet actually traps dust and allergens rather than letting them circulate the way hard flooring can, so regular vacuuming with a good filter matters more than which specific carpet you choose. If allergies are a serious concern in your household, a low-pile, easy-to-clean option is usually the more practical pick.

Got Kids, or Just Want Something That Lasts?

A hard-wearing twist or loop pile in a mid-tone colour hides marks and wear far better than a pale, deep-pile Saxony.

Want the Easiest Carpet to Clean?

Stain-resistant, tightly-woven synthetic ranges are the simplest to wipe down and maintain day to day.

How Fitting Works

1

You Order

After your free home measure, you'll get a clear quote. Once you're happy, we place your order.

2

We Arrange Your Fitter

We book fitting through our trusted, vetted independent fitting team, and we can also arrange uplift and removal of your old carpet at the same time so you're not left dealing with it yourself.

3

You Get a Confirmed Date

No vague windows. We agree a slot that works around you.

4

A Reminder Lands the Day Before

So there are no surprises and you can plan around it.

Your Fitter Gets to Work

They can move up to five pieces of empty furniture to clear the room, and can also arrange door easing (trimming doors that catch on a thicker new carpet) or carpet whipping (turning spare carpet into a neat rug or stair runner) if you need either. Payment for the fitting itself goes directly to the fitter on the day, separate from your carpet order.

Most single rooms are fitted within a day. Larger or whole-house jobs take longer, we'll give you a realistic timeframe when we confirm your booking.

Areas We Supply & Fit In

Our showroom is in Wellingborough, and that's where we do most of our free home measuring visits from. We regularly supply and fit carpets in and around:

Wellingborough

Outside these areas, we can still supply your carpet UK-wide, and we'll always confirm whether fitting can be arranged for your specific location before you order, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What is the best carpet for stairs?

A hard-wearing twist or loop pile is usually the best choice. Stairs get more wear than any other part of the house, and these pile types hold up better and grip more safely underfoot than a soft Saxony.

Q What carpet is best for pets?

A tightly woven, stain-resistant carpet, typically polypropylene or a treated wool blend, holds up best against claws and makes accidents easier to clean up.

Q How much does carpet cost in Wellingborough?

It depends on the carpet type, the size of the room, and whether you want it supplied only or supplied and fitted. Rather than quote a generic figure that might not apply to your room, we'll give you an accurate, no-obligation price after a free home measure.

Q Does carpet fitting include underlay?

Not automatically, it depends on your quote. We'll go through underlay options with you at your free home measure and make sure it's clearly itemised in your price before you commit.

Q What is the difference between wool and polypropylene carpet?

Wool is a natural fibre with a premium look and feel and good natural resilience. Polypropylene is synthetic, generally more affordable, and more resistant to staining, which is why it's popular for families and rental properties.

Q Which carpet is easiest to clean?

Tightly-woven, stain-resistant synthetic carpets are the simplest to maintain day to day and the most forgiving of spills.

Q Can you carpet stairs and landings?

Yes, this is one of the jobs we do most often. We can also fit striped or patterned stair runners if you want more than a plain finish.

Q Do I need new underlay with a new carpet?

In most cases, yes, it's what actually gives your new carpet the support and lifespan it's designed for. Old, compressed underlay generally won't do the job properly, though we can assess your existing underlay at your free home measure.

Q How long does carpet fitting take?

Most single rooms are fitted within a day. Larger jobs or whole-house fits take longer, we'll give you a realistic timeframe once we've measured and confirmed your booking.

Q Can carpet be fitted in a rental property?

Yes. We regularly work with landlords who want a durable, easy-to-clean carpet that will hold up well between tenants.

Still have a question we haven't covered? Ask us directly, we'd rather answer it properly than have you guess.
